Ulysseus and UNAM Europe Improve Adolescent Mental Health Through Community Action

On 7–8 May, the University of Seville will host the seminar Adolescent mental health: a community intervention perspective. The event is part of the Seminario Permanente series organised by UNAM Europa and will bring together lecturers, researchers, and mental health professionals from ten universities across Europe and Latin America, including several partner institutions of the Ulysseus Alliance.

This initiative is celebrated at the Pavilion of Mexico and is also streamed. Jointly organised by Ulysseus European University and UNAM Europa, this seminar represents a flagship example of Ulysseus’ international cooperation beyond Europe, strengthening dialogue and research collaboration between Europe and Latin America in response to global mental health challenges affecting young people.

An International Forum for Research, Prevention, and Community Intervention

The programme places adolescent mental health at the centre of discussions, with a strong emphasis on prevention, psychological well-being, and community-based responses in schools, universities, neighbourhoods, and digital environments.

The seminar aims to share research evidence, intervention models, and international experiences, while contributing to the development of a future research and action agenda focused on supporting youth mental health, particularly within educational settings. Sessions will address key contemporary challenges such as addictions and youth mental health, adolescent suicide prevention, and emotional well-being from a gender perspective, alongside the impact of social determinants and structural inequalities on young people.

Particular attention will also be given to school- and university-based interventions, resilience and mindfulness following academic setbacks, the mental health of international students, and the influence of social media on adolescents’ well-being. Community health services and innovative prevention strategies will be highlighted as essential tools for strengthening mental health support systems for younger populations.

Institutional Commitment and Strategic Outlook

The seminar was officially inaugurated on 7 May by Julián Martínez, Vice-Rector for Internationalisation at the University of Seville; Rocío Martínez de Pablos, General Coordinator of Ulysseus; and Ciro Murayama, Director of UNAM Spain, demonstrating strong institutional support for this international initiative.

On the second day, a working meeting will bring together speakers, representatives from UNAM Spain, and members of the Ulysseus Alliance to advance the design of a joint research and intervention framework on adolescent and youth mental health in school settings. The event will conclude with a closing session reaffirming the participating institutions’ shared commitment to international cooperation and to the creation of healthier, more supportive environments for adolescents and young adults.
