The University of Genoa (UniGe)
One of the largest universities in Italy
The University of Genoa, known also with the acronym UniGe is one of the largest universities in Italy. It is located in the city of Genoa and regional Metropolitan City of Genoa, on the Italian Riviera in the Liguria region of northwestern Italy. The original university was founded in 1481.
The University of Genoa has high-ranking positions among the European universities in multiple computer science fields: in machine learning and pattern recognition the University of Genoa is the best scientific institution in Italy and is ranked 36th in Europe; in computer vision the University of Genoa is the best scientific institution in Italy and is ranked 34th in Europe; in computer graphics the University of Genoa is ranked 2nd institution in Italy and 35th in Europe. The University of Genoa has a strong collaboration with the Italian Institute of Technology (IIT), since its foundation in 2005.

Ride to campus
By plane
Take Volabus outside airport and get off Principe Railway station
By train
Get off at Genova Principe railway station, walk down via Balbi, reach Piazza dell’Annunziata
By car
Take A26 highway and get out Genova Ovest – follow Porto Antico where you can find parking
By metro
Get off at Darsena station, walk straight on the left to via delle Fontane and cross Piazza dell’Annunziata. The office is inside the building n° 6.
By bus
Take one of the following buses: 18, 18/, 20, 34, 35, 35/, 39, 40.
Academic registration at the university

Student cards
Young people between 15-29 years old can obtain a discount. More info here.
Transport plan
- Monthly ticket € 48,00
- One year season ticket for students under the age of 26, it costs € 200 for students who have an annual income of € 22,000 or less
Mobile plan
The main Italian mobile phone companies are: Fastweb, Postemobile, Tim, Vodafone, Wind. Ask for information about their offers (phone calls – SMS – Internet) and activate a sim card.
Health insurance
EU students come to Italy with their European Health Service card issued in their country of residence. If they need to undertake medical examinations, they can address any general practitioner free of charge (a list of general practitioners is available upon request at the International Students Office).
Extra EU students must apply to the National Health Service.
In order to submit their application, they must pay € 700 through F24 form available in ASL 3 Office.
Health – Complementary coverage
Private health insurance depends on your choice and could guarantees different coverage of the National Health Service.

Residency permits
The residence permit is issued to foreign citizens coming from Extra EU countries who attend a course – university or training course – In Italy, after they were granted a visa for study purposes from the Italian Embassy or Consulate in their country of origin or residence.

The university of Genoa since its foundation has delivered 46 Gold medals to the italian students, and 2 gold medals to the International students, specifically to the Israeli student Khor hoksari in 1993, and to the Albanian student Agasi Bledar in 2021, It has delivered 122 honoris titles to its alumni, and has been part of a continuos public opening in the last 20 years.

Do’s and don’ts
- Forms of politeness: say “Ciao” / “Buona sera” (after 6 p.m.) when entering a store, restaurant / cafe
- Say “Arrivederci” when leaving. Use “Per piacere” and “Grazie”. Also valid for emails intended for public authority representatives.
- Dress appropriately. Shorts / flip flops are too casual and reserved for the beach. Wear shoes in public buildings, no barefoot walking
- Don’t use “Tu” but rather “Lei” until the person suggests you refer to them otherwise.
