Starting from a simple observation, that contemporary life is increasingly translated into data, the presentation explores how automated systems are already involved in decisions that affect people’s lives: hiring processes, rankings, access to loans, digital platforms, and many other forms of algorithmic evaluation. These systems are often perceived as neutral or purely technical. Yet, as the talk shows, they are always built upon human choices: choices about what counts as merit, reliability, competence, or success.
