Russian Culture XV–XVII Centuries (Elementary Russian Culture 2) (Spring Semester 2026)
The course covers the various aspects of Russian culture from the 15th to the 17th century: historical and socio-political context, art and architecture.
Course content
- The reigns of Vasilii II and Ivan III
- The artistic and religious revival under Ivan III. The reign of Vasilii III
- The reign of Ivan IV, known as “the Terrible” (1533–1584)
- The extinction of the Rurik dynasty and the Time of Troubles, 1605–1613
- The first Romanovs and the opening toward the West
- Religious architecture in the 16th–17th centuries
Learning outcomes
By the end of this course, I should be able to…
- trace its evolution and determine its place in relations with the West during that period
- deepen my overall knowledge of the various aspects of Russian culture from the 15th to the 17th centuries within the historical and socio-political context.
