Course content

  • The reigns of Vasilii II and Ivan III
  • The artistic and religious revival under Ivan III. The reign of Vasilii III
  • The reign of Ivan IV, known as “the Terrible” (1533–1584)
  • The extinction of the Rurik dynasty and the Time of Troubles, 1605–1613
  • The first Romanovs and the opening toward the West
  • Religious architecture in the 16th–17th centuries

Learning outcomes

By the end of this course, I should be able to…

  • trace its evolution and determine its place in relations with the West during that period
  • deepen my overall knowledge of the various aspects of Russian culture from the 15th to the 17th centuries within the historical and socio-political context.
