  • Alexander I and Napoleon I
  • The Decembrist Revolt in 1825
  • The reign of Nicholas I
  • The reigns of Alexander II and Alexander III: reforms and counter-reforms. Major intellectual movements
  • Russian art and architecture in the 19th century

Learning outcomes

By the end of this course, I should be able to…

  • determine the place of the Russian Empire in the international context of the time
  • have a global understanding of the political, social, and cultural issues in 19th-century Russia
  • trace the evolution of political thought
