The aim of the course is to acquire a comprehensive understanding of the political, social and economic issues in Russia’s history during the 18th century, as well as the development of sciences, and artistic and cultural life.

Learning outcomes

A student who has completed this course will be able to:

  • Determine the place of the Russian Empire in the international context of the time.
  • Acquire a global understanding of the political, social, and economic issues in the history of Russia in the 18th century, as well as the development of sciences, artistic and cultural life.

Course content

  • The reforms of Peter the Great and their impact on political and social life.
  • The era of coups d’état. The evolution of political, economic, and cultural life under the reign of Elizabeth I. Diplomatic issues.
  • The reforms under the reigns of Peter III and Catherine the Great.
  • Russian art and architecture in the 18th century.
