Russian Culture (20th century) – Intermediate 5
This course aims to deepen overall knowledge of aspects of Russian culture and civilisation in the 20th century within the historical, economic, and socio-political context.
Learning outcomes
By the end of this course, students should be able to:
- Demonstrate an overall understanding of the political, economic, and social issues in the history of the USSR, as well as Soviet art and architecture.
- Develop a deeper understanding of the Soviet Union’s role on the international stage and its relations with Western countries.
- Apply appropriate methodological tools to enhance their analytical skills.

- The Russian Empire at the beginning of the 20th century: political, economic, and social evolution
- Russia and the First World War
- The Russian Revolutions and their consequences
- The Soviet Union in the 1920s–1930s
- The USSR on the international stage
- Soviet art and architecture
