Setting Standards for Enhancing Universities’ Reputation and Attractiveness Across the Ulysseus European University

Attracting and managing talents and human resources in general at universities is a key issue for a sustainable and thriving HEIs’ community. Introducing standards in this field, such as the HRS4R and the HR Excellence Logo stimulate the institutional changes towards better working conditions for researchers and provide the institutions with a seal of recognition and international visibility.

Increasingly, funding agencies and assessment frameworks are incorporating metrics related to talent attraction, career development, and staff support systems. In this context, alignment with evolving research assessment practices, such as those championed by CoARA (Coalition for Advancing Research Assessment), becomes critical.

The workshop is a part of the Ulysseus Košice Week.

Aims

The purpose of this workshop is to foster knowledge exchange and strategic dialogue among Ulysseus partner institutions engaged in HR management, talent attraction, and research assessment reform. Discussions will focus on aligning recruitment, retention, mobility, and working condition policies across the alliance. Participants will explore EU-wide standards such as HRS4R and Euraxess and reflect on their compatibility with CoARA commitments—particularly the emphasis on recognizing diverse research careers and improving researcher working environments.

The main goals are:

Share knowledge and insights on recruitment, retention, and mobility policies as key factors for institutional reputation and research impact.
Promote the application and benefits of the HRS4R framework and Euraxess among Ulysseus partners.
Explore evolving research assessment frameworks—including CoARA—with a focus on researcher well-being, working conditions, and institutional responsibility.
Develop a leadership engagement strategy to advocate for broader adoption of HRS4R.

Target groups

Staff from Ulysseus partner universities engaged in the topics of the workshop either from the research or from the administration and management side, are invited to apply for participation (researchers, managers, administrative staff from Ulysseus partner universities).

The registration for the workshop will be approved by the workshop organisers.

Event Organiser and Venue

The event is organised by the Ulysseus European University and is part of the Ulysseus Košice Week. The Summit and all parallel sessions will be held at the Technical University of Košice in Slovakia.

Ulysseus Košice Week

Running 20 – 24 October 2025 at the Technical University of Košice, Ulysseus Košice Week is set to be the alliance’s flagship multi-event of the year, packaging twenty back-to-back activities into one vibrant programme and marking 5th anniversary of Ulysseus European University.

Alongside high-level governance meetings such as the Ulysseus Summit, the week weaves in ten internal project sessions, specialised workshops and student assemblies while opening its doors to the wider community through four headline public events: the Ulysseus R&I Conference on Digital Transformation of Industry, the presentation of Ulysseus Innovation Hub at TUKE, an Equality–Diversity–Community Engagement forum and the art-and-science session Creative Playgrounds.

By blending strategic project work with outward-facing forums on digitalisation, entrepreneurship, inclusion and the arts, Ulysseus Košice Week will transform Košice into a living laboratory of Ulysseus research, innovation and civic engagement, showcasing the alliance’s impact across Europe.
