Architecture, city and culture in East Asia. China versus Japan

This course aims to provide a wide range of approaches to the complexity of the architectural, urban and cultural context in East Asia, assuming requirements from different fields of human activity, understanding and sensibility.

To this end, architectural and urban knowledge will be integrated within the scope of cultural tradition and social framework without avoiding the diversity of East Asian physical environments.

As this complex issue admits different approaches, we do not seek to impose a simple vision, but rather to encourage students the development of their own perspective and conceptual talents.

Consequently, we will offer a transversal and diachronic vision based on conceptual criteria to describe the meaning of some postulates that have been developed over time and have a substantial impact on the current situation and meaning of East Asian architecture, city and culture.
