Ulysseus European University is launching COMPASS Insights, a series of webinars on key regional and local challenges.
These are part of the calendar of activities of “COMPASS: Leading Ulysseus to become a European University excellence model through Research and Innovation”, a Horizon 2020 project of Ulysseus and the flagship for its R&I agenda and strategy.
Organised by Ulysseus Innovation Hubs, these webinars will bring together experts from academia, industry and NGO’s, among other organisations to discuss key regional and local challenges.
The outbreak of the war in Ukraine has made a rethinking of energy policy in the European Union much more necessary, given the vulnerability it presents due to its dependence on foreign energy, especially Russian gas and oil. This situation forces us to bet even more on renewable energy sources, which are not only an effective tool in the fight against climate change but also a powerful formula for the European Union to achieve energy autonomy.
Four experts will take part in this webinar, two law experts (Roberto Galán-Vioque, Professor of Public Law at the University of Seville and Maria Bertel, Professor of Public Law at the Karl-Franzens–University of Graz) and two from the field of engineering (Ángel Arcos-Vargas and Antonio Gómez-Expósito, both of them Professors and researchers in the Electrical Engineering Department of the University of Seville).

Bio
Ángel Luis Trigo García is currently Director of International Strategy of the University of Seville and Associated Professor of Electrical Engineering at this same university. He is graduated in Industrial Engineering (2003), Master in Electric Energy Systems (2008) and PhD in Electrical Engineering (2010) by the University of Seville. Dr. Trigo has more than 10 years of experience in the Management of Higher Education Institutions, especially concerning Networking and International partnerships, International Offices, International Projects, Students‘ mobility, International Promotion and Communication and International Rankings. He has more than 19 years’ experience in electrical engineering, in system control, optimization problems and energy market. His research group is one of the most relevant research teams in Spain with a relevant international projection, not only for the volume of publications, but also for its knowledge transfer activities. The group is developing R&D projects in collaboration with public institutions (Junta de Andalucía, Government of Spain or European Union) and with the most important companies in the electricity sector (REE, Endesa, Gas Natural Fenosa or Siemens). He has published more than 15 research articles in peer-reviewed journals, more than 20 articles in international conferences, participated in 14 National and European research projects, 1 as responsible, more than 30 knowledge transfer projects with companies and collaborator in a Capacity Building Eramus + project. US has awarded him with the doctoral prize and Engineering School with the young docent prize. He is a shareholder and promoter of INGELECTUS INNOVATIVE ELECTRICAL SOLUTIONS S.L. a spin-off company of US.

Bio
Antonio Gomez-Exposito is the Endesa Chair Professor at the Department of Electrical Engineering, University of Seville, Spain, which he chaired for twelve years. He has coauthored over 350 publications, including a dozen textbooks and monographs related to Power Systems. He is a Fellow of the IEEE and past editor of IEEE Transactions on Power Systems. Currently, he serves as Vice Editor-in-Chief of the Journal of Modern Power Systems and Clean Energy. He has received many recognitions, such as the IEEE/PES Outstanding Power Engineering Educator Award (2019), the Golden Insignia granted by the Spanish Association for the Development of Electrical Engineering (2013) and the Research and Technology Transfer Award, granted by the Government of Andalusia (2011). In 2013 he was elected a member of the Royal Academy of Sciences in Seville, and became engaged with the Board of Managers of the Spanish TSO (REE) since 2018 to 2020.

He has published 8 books and more than 80 articles and book chapters in national and international Reviews and editorials. He is the principal investigator of the Research Project PID2021-124031NB-C41 Legal challenges for a 100% renewable energy system that coordinate the proyect Legal framework of decarbonization (MACODESCARB) financedo by the Spanish government and the European Unión (FEDER)
He is a member of the Spanish Observatory of Environmental Policies.
He has carried out research stays at the Vermont Law School in the United States (2016), at the Institut für Berg- und Energierecht de la Ruhr üniversität Bochum (2015), at the Humboldt-Universität zu Berlin in the Republic Federal of Germany (2001), at the Université de Paris I, Phanthéon-Sorbonne in France (1996) and at the Institut fúr öffentliches Recht de la Rheinisiche Friedrich-Wilhelm-Universität in Bonn (1995).

He received the Industrial Engineering MSc and Ph.D. degrees in 1989 and 2002, and recently in 2019, a second Ph.D. in Economics, both summa cum laude at the University of Seville (Spain). He has served for over 25 years in Endesa and Global Enel achieving an Executive Vice Presidents positions at T&D Business. He has participated in more than 30 R+D and has written close to 100 papers and conferences, including 38 papers in indexed journals, 15 of them in 1st decile WOS positions. His primary areas of interest are regulation, business models, new technologies, renewables, storage, environment, reliability, efficiency, and energy policy.

Maria Bertel has been a full professor of public law with a focus on administrative law at the Institute of Public Law and Political Science at the University of Graz since October 2022. Previ-ously, she held a post-doctoral position in the H2020 project “EC² – Energy Citizenship and Ener-gy Communities for a Clean-Energy Transition”; moreover, she was an Elise-Richter-Fellow of the Austrian Science Fund (at the University of Innsbruck) as well as a post-doctoral fellow at Central European University in Budapest. Maria Bertel has published articles and book chapters on the topic of, e.g., democracy, administrative jurisdiction, and environmental law. Her current re-search focuses on sustainability and digitalization.

Munster, Kurt-Schwabe Mittweida, AAMC Miami, World Trade Center Dubai, Global Science & Technology Forum in Singapore, Nanotech in Tokyo, Peter the Great Petersburg Polytechnic University, European Defence Agency and others. Since 2006 he took part on several European Science Foundation’s annual trainings on advanced materials, nanobiotechnology, nanomedicine, nanosafety and others.
In 2014 he was visiting scientist at Jan Dlugosz Uni. Czestochowa. He participated on industrial inquires and failure analysis within the industrial sector in the field of energy, oil & gas, coating industry (eustream a.s., SPP-distribution, ENEL, SES Tlmače, Bukóza holding a.s., Matador automotive, Kerex a.s., U.S Steel, VÚZ PI etc.).
He was awarded by president of IAAM prof. Hisatoshi Kobayashi with prestigious International Association for Advanced Materials Scientist Medal 2016 in Miami congress, US. Since July 2017 he acted as member of the Steel Advisory Group, since 2020 as member of COSCO group at Research Fund Coal and Steel (RFCS), European Commission and since April 2019 as CnGE representative of the Slovak Republic in the Captech Group at European Defence Agency, since August 2019 he has been working in the Presidency of the Slovak Battery Alliance (SBaA), since 2019 in Slovak National Hydrogen Association and since 2020 in Advisory Council in Kosice Self-Government Region.
