COMPASS Conference: Transferable Skills for Research & Innovation

This conference was organised by Haaga-Helia University of Applied Sciences and took place on October 4-5, 2023. This event offered participants an international forum to tackle the key research and innovation challenges that are currently faced in the EU, and which are addressed by the Ulysseus Innovation Hubs. The conference facilitated the cooperation of researchers and peers from all Ulysseus partner universities and beyond. 

 

On the first day of the event participants had the chance to present their work-in-progress projects or completed research papers, either in person or online.

 

The second day of the conference was dedicated to enhancing researchers’ transferable and complementary skills through engaging workshops, informative panels, and thought-provoking roundtable discussions. These sessions aimed to equip participants with valuable tools, methodologies, and insights that extend beyond their specific research topics.

Conference Objectives

COMPASS CONFERENCE: TRANSFERABLE SKILLS FOR RESEARCH & INNOVATION.

How to successfully navigate your research journey? The role of transferable and complimentary skills to advance your professional development.

This conference aimed to bring together early-stage and experienced researchers to share their work affiliated with Ulysseus European University Innovation Hub topics:

  1. Sustainable energy, transport, mobility for smart cities
  2. Ageing & wellbeing
  3. Tourism, arts & heritage
  4. Sustainable entrepreneurship and impact
  5. Digitalization, robotics and cybersecurity transforming the future
  6. Applied AI for business and education
  7. Socio-ecological sustainability

 

The COMPASS Conference offered the participants an international forum that involves peers from all eight partner universities and beyond. Participants had the chance to present their work-in-progress projects or completed research papers, either in person or online.

 

 

The scope of the research work was not restricted, and includes conceptual, empirical, and position papers.

In addition to the presentation of papers, workshops, roundtables and interactive sessions were organized aiming to enhance early-stage researcher skills.

Sustainable Energy, Transport, Mobility for Smart Cities

One of the greatest challenges of the 21st century lies in the sustainable generation and use of energy to develop a balanced urban model. Ulysseus fosters interdisciplinary and intersectoral research and innovation in the field, in collaboration with associated companies and other regional and local stakeholders. The following research areas have been identified: Energy systems, Energy for society, Smart cities, and Materials in Energy.

Ageing & Wellbeing

 

Education and R&D in health care and welfare is a key priority in the European agenda. The economic crisis and demographic change have compromised public health in particular, a key challenge for our societies. Topics dealt within the Ulysseus alliance include, e.g., “Ageing in the city”, “Silver economy”, “Environmental impacts on ageing and well-being” and “Understanding the process of ageing”.

Tourism, Arts & Heritage

 

Ulysseus develops an innovative and technological landscape, and heritage and arts mapping, giving new insights and applications relevant to a sustainable tourism management and policy. It does so, for instance, by creating role model landscape, fostering continuous mutual learning and networking, and exchanging knowledge and practices through a detailed transfer and mentoring programme involving relevant local stakeholders.

Sustainable entrepreneurship and impact

This thematic field focuses on the acceleration of technological business models by exploiting established structures, integrating partner services of the regional ecosystem and creating new formats and structures at the Ulysseus universities. It strives to create a space in the Ulysseus network for motivated talent – regardless of their geographic location – to implement innovative ideas sustainably in the spirit of entrepreneurship

Digitalization, robotics and cybersecurity transforming the future

One of EU’s top priority is digital transformation for sustainable and green growth, while maintaining global competitiveness. Ulysseus is driving this transformation with advanced technologies in various industries, including manufacturing, healthcare, and the creative industry. They focus on cutting-edge areas such as robotics, cybersecurity, AI, big data analytics, and virtual reality. Ulysseus also prioritizes clean technologies, sustainable energy, and biomedical engineering to ensure a greener future. A special emphasis in Ulysseus is put on robotics and cybersecurity.

Applied AI for Business and Education

The use of AI in Europe has increased substantially and represents both huge opportunities and major challenges both socially and economically. The European Green Deal has indicated the adoption of AI as one of the key tools in achieving the goals of the twin transition and this is especially the case related to business and education. The use of AI in education represents many challenges and remains a subject that requires further research and practical application; data usage, ethics and advancing the use and knowledge of AI in education demand further competence development of teachers, school administration and students to extract the full potential of this new technology. Ulysseus aims to contribute actively to this research and practical application.

Socio-ecological sustainability

Ulysseus drives sustainable wellbeing in its cities and regions with innovative solutions and civic engagement. Through research-based learning experiences, it fosters needs-based innovation and intergenerational public discourse. To tackle urgent global challenges like climate change, energy transition, biodiversity loss, peace and democracy questions, interdisciplinary and Social Sciences and Humanities (SSH) contributions to sustainability research are vital. Societal transformation is essential, and innovative strategies are urgently required.
