Agenda

Day 1-2

Day 1: Introduction – May 13
Given the nature of the challenges facing research activities, the ethical dimension has become of fundamental importance. For the set of activities funded by the European Union, ethics is an integral part of research from start to finish. Ethical compliance is considered essential to achieve research of real excellence.

9:00 Check-in

9:30 Welcome and Introduction to Ulysseus

11:00 Cofee Break

12:00 The whole dimension on ethic in a changing world. New challenges

13:00 Lunch

14:30 The Ethics of Sustainability

16:30 Cultural Visit

Day 2: Research Ethics – May 14
The in-depth ethical evaluation from the conceptual stage of the proposal aims to both respect the legal framework and improve the quality of the research. Ethical conduct in research involves the application of fundamental ethical principles and legislation to scientific research in all possible fields of inquiry.

9:30 Ethical aspects in experimentation with human samples and patients. Research ethics committees. Good practices
11:00 Cofee Break
12:00 Ethical aspects in animal experimentation. Animal experimentation ethical committees. Good practices.
13:00 Lunch
14:30 Ethics in scientific publications

Day 3: Digital Ethics – May 15
Digital science and technology are at the center of major economic and social changes. Therefore, we need to think about the ethical aspects of making and using these tools. These are the topics we
address in this session.

9:30 Data Protection. Legislation in the different countries of the alliance. Offices and data protection services at the alliance’s universities. Good practices.
11:00 Cofee Break
12:00 Ethics in digitalization and cybersecurity
13:00 Lunch
TBD Cultural Visit

Day 3-5

Day 4: Ethics applied to Artificial Intelligence – May 16
The way an AI solution is implemented or used can change the ethical characteristics of the system. Therefore, it is important to ensure ethics compliance even in cases where research projects do not develop an AI-based system. Currently, the EU is pending the adoption of a Proposal for a Regulation establishing harmonized rules on artificial intelligence (Artificial Intelligence Act) . When this Regulation enters into force, it may end up affecting the design and development of research activities. Therefore, prior to its adoption and entry into force, Ulysseus should strengthen its Ethical Appraisal capabilities and use the Assessment Checklist for Trustworthy Artificial Intelligence (ALTAI) to develop procedures to detect, assess the level and address potential risks.

9:30 Where are technologies going?

11:00 Cofee Break

12:00 Ethics in AI

13:00 Lunch

14:30 Ethics in Robotics

Day 5: Conclusions and Farewell – May 17
Ulysseus collaborative research projects could reinforce the ethical dimension of their collaborative projects through the creation of the Ulysseus Ethics Appraisal Advisory Board following the suggestions of the European Commission. From the beginning of these collaborative projects, having a specialized ethics advisory could help to deal with ethical issues, establishing the procedures to handle them appropriately.

9:00 Meditation and relaxation
9:30 Workshop for the stablishment of the the Ulysseus Ethics Appraisal Advisory Board
11:00 Cofee Break
12:00 Conclusions and Farewell
13:00 Cultural exchange: dance, gastronomy

Virtual Component/Part

Ulysseus collaborative research projects could reinforce the ethical dimension of their collaborative projects through the creation of the Ulysseus Ethics Appraisal Advisory Board following the suggestions of the European Commission279. From the beginning of these collaborative projects, having a specialized ethics advisory could help to deal with ethical issues, establishing the procedures to handle them appropriately (i.e. processing of special categories of personal data (formerly known as « sensitive data »), AI applications involving human-machine interaction, etc.). In the physical part we will have a workshop for the Stablishment of the Ulysseus Ethics Appraisal Advisory Board, that will be further developed in the virtual sessions.
