Workshop: Preregistration for Researchers

This workshop provides an in-depth exploration of preregistration and its role in improving research design and transparency. Participants will learn about the key differences between exploratory and confirmatory research and how preregistration can enhance study efficiency by clarifying hypotheses and methods in advance. The session covers best practices, including different types of preregistration templates, and how to document any deviations from the initial plan. Attendees will also engage in discussions about the feasibility and relevance of preregistration in their specific research areas, offering practical insights to apply in their work.

Workshop: Preregistration for Researchers

Target group:

Doctoral and postdoctoral researchers

Celebration dates:

Wednesday, 27 Nov 2024, 09:00–12:00

Description:

To increase the trustworthiness of confirmatory studies, many researchers have been specifying their research plan before conducting their studies. These preregistrations are a well-regarded practice for increasing trustworthiness and transparency of studies. In this workshop, the following topics will be covered:

  1. How preregistrations prevent p-hacking and HARKing
  2. Hands-on: Preregistration in 15 minutes
  3. Gold standards of preregistrations: comprehensiveness, specificity, and structure
  4. Tools to facilitate preregistrations and registered reports
  5. Dealing with deviations

Objectives:

  • Learn about preregistration in the context of exploratory versus confirmatory research and how it can help you to design studies more efficiently
  • Familiarize yourself with best practices for preregistration
  • Get an overview of preregistration types and templates
  • Learn how to document deviations transparently
  • Discuss the feasibility and standing of preregistrations in the context of your field of research
